POWER/RANGERS – Multiple Sources / Mirrors to Watch – Dark & Gritty Reboot, Fan Made Short Film Discussion & Review / Preview

Recently a fan made short film titled “POWER/RANGERS” was released for free on the internet (Released February 25, 2015). It stars Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck from the Battlestar Gallactica TV Series) and James Van der Beek (Dawson from Dawsons Creek). It is an adult-content, R-rated take on the Power Rangers story with plenty of violence.

Director Joseph Kahn (Twitter @JosephKahn or josephkahn.com) probably hasn’t made any major motion picture films that you’ve heard of, but he does have quite a portfolio. Most of it includes music videos for major celebrities like Ashlee Simpson, Britney Spears, and the Backstreet Boys, with a few commercials. Perhaps this is his attempt to move into a future career in future length Hollywood films.

The 14 minute 19 second short film is definitely worth watching. It views a little more like a super-long trailer than actual short story / film, but its action packed and entertaining to say the least. The film covers the time after the classic TV show and gives a view into what may have become of our favorite Rangers. The classic name drops are all there – Kimberly, Billy, Tommy, Zack etc. The classic Blue, Pink, and Black Power Ranger suits show up of course and it is fun to see everything treated like a real movie rather than a cheap TV show.

The acting and cinematography is all professionally done and would fit right in on a big theater screen. Film buffs may argue that there are some things that could be improved upon, like the fighting choreography, but its important to keep in mind that this is a fan made experiment that didn’t have a big Hollywood budget of hundreds of millions of dollars.
